Stretch Your Wardrobe, Not Your Budget

When the economy is rocky and credit is tight, your fashion budget usually suffers. Splurging on expensive designer duds just doesn’t seem practical. So how do you maintain a great wardrobe for less money. Here are a few tips:

1. Experiment with new clothing combinations

You have a great brown pantsuit that you love. Instead of just wearing the pants with the jacket, try treating them like separates. Pair the pants with a black jacket or cardigan you may already have in your wardrobe. Use the jacket with a dress, a skirt or another pair of pants like jeans.

2. Accessorize

Dig out some of the jewelry, belts, and scarfs hiding in your closet. A new accessory added to an outfit gives it new life. Search thrift stores for retro or antique jewelry for little money. Invest in a good quality belt or scarf that can be worn with a number of your current clothes.

3. Shop Clothing Swaps

Have you ever borrowed your best friend’s sweater or dress? Have you ever loaned her a jacket? If so, you have participated in a clothing swap. A clothing swap is an event or party where the attendees all bring clothes that are in good condition but, they no longer wear. At the party the participants swap clothes with others who might have items that they like. Try organizing your own swap with a few friends or search the internet for clothing swaps in your area.

4. Try a new shoe

Many women get stuck in the same brown and black leather shoe rut. Try adding a new color or textured shoe to your favorite outfit to give it more life. Instead of wearing your black pumps with your black pantsuit , pair the suit with red patent pumps for a new look. Give up the brown loafers you always wear with your jeans and try some brown suede boots. Varying your shoe choices will give your current outfits a whole new look.
