International Women’s Day, on March 8th, is the biggest day of the year to simply celebrate women. This major day is celebrated annually around the world, to reflect women’s economic, political and social achievements – both historically and up to the present day.
The first International Women’s Day was observed in 1909 in the US, following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. And from the feminist sixties up to today, the day has gone from strength to strength with more and more women getting involved.
Now in its hundredth year, this day sees governments, groups and organizations focusing gender issues, on both a local and global level. With the majority of International Women’s Day events being held in the UK, with plenty across Europe and the US, there are hundreds of opportunities for women to get involved, and for men to support them along the way!
But not only that, International Women’s Day is a time for everyone to celebrate women on a more personal level, and many give the most special woman or women in their lives a gift as a sign of their appreciation. While women around the world are fighting for gender equality, it is easy to forget the hard work women do that that is closer to home, and just as important.
Whether she is the mother of your child, your bride-to-be, your best friend or sister, if she’s always there for you when you need her the most, then this is the day to celebrate her strength and solidarity. On this most monumental day, make sure you show support, love and appreciation to the most important women in your life – our International Women’s Day gift ideas are designed to help you do just that.
