How To Stop Getting Old

George Burns’s observation that, ‘You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old’, is just as relevant today as it was back in George’s day. We’ve come up with some interesting ways to slow down the ageing process and this collection can be expected to deliver, provided, of course that we choose well. Here are some things that we need to do to make sure we don’t get (too) old.

  1. We need to figure out whose example we intend to follow. We seem to go through life comparing our progress to what others of a similar age are doing or achieving. What others of similar vintage are doing motivates us either positively or negatively. Sophia Loren, for instance, might provide a better example of an ageing beauty than a younger starlet. The choice is ours to make.
  2. We need to pace ourselves and focus on the BIG issues. Life is not a sprint, so take time to enjoy the view and the journey. And keep in mind that Usain Bolt doesn’t run a world record every time he steps out onto the track, so curb your expectations of yourself and any recognition you might consider should come your way.
  3. We need to be kind to ourselves. We may not be the richest, the thinnest, the tallest, the one with the best hair, the most successful, the cutest, the fastest jogger, or whatever. Get over it! Max Smart regarded himself a ‘second best’ because he knew there would always be conjecture about being numero uno.
  4. We need to stay in control of our life. There’s a lineup of others who’d like to take control of our life if we allow them. Walmart’s Sam Walton claimed that it’s not what you drive but what drives you that really matters. It’s a claim that’s worthy of consideration.
  5. We need to stop worrying. It is said that the only time we need to worry is when we look up and notice that the sky is falling in. Given that this event has not happened yet – and is unlikely to occur – you’d have to question what worrying can hope to achieve.
  6. We need to tell it how we see it. If someone seeks our opinion, give it! The life experience that comes with ageing is a valuable commodity not available to everyone.
