Holi Celebrations: Yellow Sarees for Basant Utsav
Holi makes the entire nation indulge in boundless merriment by playing with vibrant color powders or colored water along with their loved ones. Holi celebrations in Northern part of India are quite boisterous and vivacious. On the contrary, South India witnesses rather sober and restrained Holi celebrations. However, in the entire nation West Bengal celebrates Holi in a distinctive manner. This unique Holi celebration was first initiated by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan and it continues even today. Holi is known by different names throughout the country. In Haryana, it is popular by the name of Dulandi Holi while people of Maharashtra call it Rangpanchami or Shimgo. Similarly, in West Bengal, Holi is popularly known as Basant Utsav, Dol Yatra or Dol Purnima. Here the celebrations are known for their grace, elegance and the dignified way in which it is celebrated. Right from little girls to grown up women clad themselves in bright yellow Sarees with flower garlands around their neck and sing melodious songs to welcome the season of Spring.
It is a tradition to wear bright yellow Sarees for this Holi celebration in West Bengal. Most often, it is cotton yellow Sarees featuring either green or red plain borders that is spotted on women. Alternatively, few women choose to wear lustrous Yellow Silk Sarees, Yellow Art Silk Sarees, and Yellow Mysore Silk Sarees amongst so many varieties of Silk Sarees.
For a traditional look, plain Yellow Silk Saree looks undoubtedly the best. However, Yellow Silk Sarees featuring contrast green or red borders with zari woven pattern and embellishments such as sequins and beads indeed enhances the beauty of a woman on this charming day. Additionally, Yellow Silk Sarees revealing printed or zari woven buttas are even better options. The tradition of wearing Yellow Sarees on this day has been derived from the name of the festival – Basant Utsav. Basanti means the color saffron and hence the practice of wearing saffron Sarees or more popularly yellow Sarees. The yellow Sarees worn by women on this day are not of bright lime yellow color; instead they are in deep yellow shades leaning towards orange and saffron.
Even though fashionable Designer Saree is the current trend, it’s the traditional Yellow Cotton Sarees or Yellow Silk Sarees that rule the day. Women draped in vibrant Yellow Sarees singing and dancing gracefully to herald the season of spring indeed makes this unique Holi celebration quite charming.
