Before the LYMErix got its license, efficacy studies suggest that the recipients reported soreness and swelling but adverse effects in the body system is not commonly reported but adverse reactions usually after 48 hours from immunization and subsided within three days.

Lyme disease vaccine is given to people who are fifteen years old and above especially those who are usually exposed to ticks due to their choice of recreation or their occupations. It is also advised for people who live in Lyme disease infected areas as precaution. It is important to note that vaccination must be considered as an adjunctive measure in avoiding this disease before it get effects badly. Other personal responsibilities include avoiding places with ticks, wearing protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks. Clothing that are light in color are also ideal in finding ticks during your personal over-all inspection when you get back home. You should decide to get a Lyme disease vaccine; you must submit yourself to risk assessment.

Lyme disease vaccine must be given to people who are at a high risk, with occupations that require working outdoors. It must also be given to people who are at a moderate risk and people exposed to tick-infected locations regardless of the amount of exposure time. Also to people who are at a low risk like those who have minimal exposure to ticks.

Individuals who are not allowed to be given this disease vaccine are those who are at no risk of getting the disease, pregnant women, and children below 15 years old, people with immunodeficiency, and those with resistance to the medication.
